about

This song follows my reflections during my October heartbreak, the by-product of a separation from an avoidant boyfriend who made me feel invisible. He was also my housemate (plot twist!) which explains my inclusion of household imagery-'twitching in the kitchen.'
I enjoyed making something that flits in between 4 and 5 time signature to reflect the ambiguity of the situation, and this is the highest melody I have ever recorded for a song. I had to engage my old opera chops to get my voice into the right place for the vocal performance.
The name of the song is a nod to how over-looked and empty I felt in the relationship and in the house after, which had very high ceilings and was quite cold in that Winter. Making this tune got me through it!

lyrics

Didn't realise you were listening
caught me twitching in the kitchen
never felt like I was glistening
cos I didn't know that you were listening

Oh, and now it's dark
I feel my heart
was it worth it? Oh
Was I even there?
My eyes my hair
the colours fade into air

Didn't ever feel like you're mine
David said I saw all the signs
my eyes were wondering all of the time
cos I didn't know you were only mine

Oh, and now it's cold
the air you hold
the love is drained
were you ever here?
You floated near
you always disappear
